Avatar is a movie I really enjoyed watching. It probably had to do a bit with the 3D modelling and the special effects, which now might not seem so impressive but for 2009 it was a big deal.

From all the scenes of the movie one that I often remember is “Jake’s first Hunt”.

I was raised on a meat-based diet. Some dishes with beef or chicken form part of my most treasured memories with my family. At the same time, I know it is best for the planet and for our health to eat in a more balanced way. Also, these animals raised to become food don’t have a great life on many occasions, which is not okay.

That’s maybe why this scene comes to mind when I cook or when I think of food in general. I do want at some point to try to transition to a vegetable diet for a while. In the meantime, if I eat meat at least I want to do it as respectfully as I can, like in the movie.

I try to choose food that I know the sources. And even if I can’t know for sure, I treat it with respect. I take a moment before eating or before cooking, and I focus on being grateful for that animal that lived a life and now becomes energy that helps us move forward. One day it will be us the ones to leave our bodies behind.
